Advice from Ice Cube: Checking in about my new years resolutions

I can’t believe it is already March. At the same time, I can’t believe it is only March.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had to endure a long winter at home with a toddler all day. Lets’ just say, I don’t recommend it for the weak. It’s like a cruel science experiment some days. Hypothesis: the Mommy will loose her sh*t after the 10th consecutive day of indoor confinement. This winter seems (to me) especially BRUTAL. It’s not just the snow and wind…we always have that in Wyoming. It’s the consistent subzero wind-chills. The temps dipping into the “feels like -30” all the friggin time…that’s beginning to feel like “normal” and it is killing me! At the same time, the school year is FLYING by. My older kiddos are morphing into little humans and growing into PEOPLE with ideas, opinions, and philosophies. The clock is ticking and they are a blinking neon reminder. Add to this a list of sad events and heartbreaking news from family and friends (distant and not-so distant) and it’s enough to make a momma cry “UNLCE”.

Just when things start to feel like drudgery and you start to think there is no reprieve in sight…sometimes….you are gifted with a day like today. A day like today has a sound track…like the great Ice Cube says, “Today was a good day.”

Just waking up in the morning gotta thank God. I don’t know but today seems kinda odd” Sing it, Cube! I was able to be outside in the sunshine and the moderate 20mph winds and 40-degree temps felt pretty damn good. Having some time to think as I pushed the stroller along, I started reflecting on my resolutions for this year…this year…the one that is already in its third month! What were those resolutions again? Have I done anything about those? So…I’m checking in and holding myself accountable.

My original post about resolutions divided my goals into four categories; intellectual, spiritual, social, physical, and occupational. I came up with three resolutions and corresponding goals for each. Here’s where I’m at now…

Intellectual: SCHOOL: I’m doing well with my schoolwork and enjoying it immensely. There are still moments when I think I’m a total lunatic for adding this complication to my life, but for the most part I LOVE IT. BOOK: My manuscript for my novel is being reviewed one last time by my über lovely, patient, kind, and brilliant (yes, I’m sucking up…what she’s doing is a HUGE favor) friend, Shannon, before I ready it for submittal. I’m sure if I’m fortunate enough to find someone who wants to represent it, there will be many more rewrites in my future, but I’m making progress. READING: Book club(s) has been a bit of a struggle as I have already failed at my goal of reading every book in its entirety. Here is a list of our books so far and my thoughts.

Cane River by Lalita Tademy — LOVE IT. One of my all-time favorite books! Thoroughly enjoyed re-reading this gem.

George Washington’s Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade , Don Yaeger —I was bored. Didn’t finish this one, and in doing so I’ve already crashed and burned with my resolution to read all the books on both club lists. Sorry, George. Boo!

12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northrup — Should be mandatory reading for every human.

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline — Loved the subject matter of this book and the format, but was a little disappointed with the development of the characters…would still recommend it.

I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzia — Seriously thought provoking. Great group discussion after we read this one.

Spiritual: CHURCH: Um…yeah…working on that attendance. *blush* VOLUNTEERING: Still looking for the right fit…it will happen. MEDITATION: I suck. Of course, I don’t practice. That may have something to do with it.

Social: PRIORITIZING FAMILY TIME: I’ve been doing better at the saying “no” thing. It has freed up more time with my kids and we’ve spent less money…all good! Holla!!! TIME WITH FEMALE FRIENDS & COMMUNITY FOCUSED SOCIAL EVENTS: Pretty much haven’t made any progress with these goals. Good thing there are ten more months in the year!

Physical: SLEEP: I’m getting more sleep. Yay me! NEW PHYSICAL DISCIPLINE: Next is the martial arts goal. I thought about that today. That’s the extent of my progress. AM WORKOUTS: The early morning workouts will just have to wait until the also sun rises in the early morning. I’ve solidified for myself I don’t do dark-thirty workouts.

Occupational: SOCIAL INTERACTION FOR MY TODDLER: I’m stoked about the Kindermusik program Little Man is in. If you live in Casper and have kiddos…get them to Vibes. Really…it’s fantastic! DESIGNATED WRITING TIME: Ah, my writing…I haven’t come close even one time to meeting my goal of setting aside time on a weekly basis to write. I’m barely squeezing it in to the nooks and crannies I can find. There are only so many hours in a day…it’s just going to be that way I fear. PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCE: I’m registered for the NANP conference in Tucson in April! Registration: check. Plane Ticket: check. Rental Car: check. And…I’m feeling like a real grown-up. Heading to conferences…by yourself…that’s like…totally a grown-up thing!

So…yes, there is room for improvement. But, Rome wasn’t built in a day, right? I’ve got some time. Besides, I’m taking my resolution advice from Cube…“Today I didn’t even have to use my A.K. 
I got to say it was a good day.”
